The Concept.Four cultural organisations from the districts of the Münsterland (Galerie Münsterland e.V., Kulturforum Rheine, Stadtmuseum Beckum, Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen) are cooperating in a large public space sculpture project. Every two years one segment of the project will be presented in one of the participating districts. This project, the Sculpture Biennial Münsterland, is intended as a permanent joint presentation which will connect latest tendencies in contemporary art to the characteristics of the region, making the Münsterland more attractive for tourists and for people interested in art. The four segments of the project are planned for 1999 in the district of Coesfeld, 2001 in the district of Steinfurt, 2003 in the district of Warendorf, and 2005 in the district of Borken. |
The Sculpture Biennial Münsterland must be seen in the context of the Münster sculpture projects of 1977, 1987 and 1997. It covers the decade up to the next Münster project which is likely to be in 2007. The concept behind the Sculpture Biennial Münsterland and its content will be an extension of the Münster approach but at the same time an alternative to it. The focus of the Sculpture Biennial Münsterland is not on urban but rural space. As a cooperative presentation, the individual art projects will not only be linked in terms of content but also organizationally, ensuring full on-site support of each project, and an even distribution of sculptures throughout the Münsterland. |
Part 3: District of Warendorf 2003. Although the Münsterland has not been heavily industrialized, the industrial use of former agricultural land is much more visible in the district of Warendorf than in the other districts. The spoil piles of the coal mine in Ahlen, the quarries in the cement producing region of Beckum/Ennigerloh and the sand pits near Warendorf have left their mark, and have become part of the landscape in this part of the Münsterland. But also religions, old (Christian) and recently established (Islam), mark the small cities and lead to confrontations of communities. This district is not a single unified region but is made up of different areas, each with its own identity. There is an exciting contrast between industrial mining areas, landscaped parkland, and cultural sites. The entire district is scattered with remarkable old buildings. |
The Warendorf segment of the Sculpture Biennial Münsterland takes up a tense position between cultural tradition and economic use of the land. By focusing a watchful eye on such paradoxical issues as destruction of landscape and restoration and conservation of nature it may be possible to point a way to the future. The Dutch curator Saskia Bos, director of De Appel in Amsterdam, is the artistic director of this segment. |
